"Natale in Casa Cupiello" becomes a "solo" directed and performed by Fusto Russo Alesi at the Teatro Nuovo in Naples

The most famous comedy of Eduardo De Filippo, Christmas in Casa Cupiello, certainly needs no introduction. Its plot, its particular "atmosphere" made up of jokes, scenes and characters, are now part of the Neapolitan cultural heritage, which everyone remembers and even mentions in everyday speeches.

Coping with a text so rooted in the culture of a people is never an easy undertaking. We must be careful to find new interpretative keys, which are able, at the same time, to maintain contact with the original sense of the drama but transmitting new emotions to the viewer. This is how a theatrical text remains immortal.

The director and actor Fausto Russo Alesi he showed talent and courage in diving deeply into the Edwardian comedy best known to the public and extracting an unedited version of it. The multitude of characters present on stage merge into one, himself, who gives voice, gestures and body to Luca and Concetta Cupiello, their children, his brother and all the other characters in the drama.

A text, the one brought on stage by Alesi al New Theater of Naples, which can be defined as one "solo" more than a monologue, of various characters who, even if they are all evoked by the unique stage presence of Alesi, are perceived as a "Multitude of solitudes". Despite being "together" and interacting with each other, they remain imaginary bodies inexorably alone with themselves.

“In Luca Cupiello's family the flow of words and emotions has been interrupted, a void has been created: we no longer talk, we monologue. These arguments led me to this daring and current reinterpretation, in which a 'multitude of solitudes' is represented and in which I try to give back, to each one, body, voice, drama ”.

Alesi's “new” drama thus tackles the theme of'incommunicability and of the generational encounter / clash, the disillusionment and loneliness of this bitter Edwardian tragicomedy, from which a profound humanity emerges.

Alesi's interpretation was approved by Luca de Filippo, who allowed this treatment of the text which thus finds enormous scenic and “physical” value, made up of voices, gestures and relationship with space.
