Finally the construction site in Piazza Municipio in Naples will soon be finished and the completion date appears to be in two weeks, therefore for the beginning April. This is what we read in the Mattino that also explains how the square will be redeveloped and will become a sort of very beautifull boulevard.

The new promenade will not only be beautiful thanks to the works that have gone on for years, but also because you can admire the stratifications of the city that tell us its ancient history. We pass from the Greco-Roman era to the Angiona one, up to the Aragonese and viceregal eras.

In fact, these works have been very long and slowed down mainly because over the years they have often been found historical artifacts very important and which must be protected.

The pedestrianization of the square

At the end of the works the square will be reopened e it will become pedestrian up to via Acton. Practically you will return to the ancient perimeter of the square and the beautiful and long walk will start from Palazzo San Giacomo to end in via Acton and vice versa.

After 22 years of waiting, we remind you that the construction site was opened in 2000, finally this large space will become usable again.

Some will also be planted saplings that will embellish the square.

Tunnel of light and archaeological finds: the new metro

Thanks to the twenty-year work and to many artifacts found, the metro station will become wonderful and will be one of the new Art Stations.

Going down to the station from Piazza Municipio you will arrive at Molo Beverello also crossing a light tunnel where some of the findings made over the years will be on display, practically walking along the foundations of the Maschio Angioino.

We remember that they have been found 5 Roman ships in 2003 and thereafter 3 more were found in good condition and of "fine workmanship". They are long 15 meters and are the testimony of the presence of the ancient Roman port in that area. These are incredible finds because it is really rare to find Roman objects in these conditions.

The artistic project of the station had been entrusted to some Portuguese architects, Álvaro Siza and Eduardo Elisio Machado.

Municipio station: strategic hub

Municipio station is very strategic because:

  • it is an interchange point between lines 1 and 6;
  • to the east it will allow you to arrive at Capodichino Airport when the project ends. From here you can take trains and buses to the metropolitan area;
  • westwards it will lead to Scampia and also to Posillipo making a change between line 1 and line 6
  • line 6, when finished, will allow you to connect the Campi Flegrei to Piazza Municipio, passing through Posillipo.

The construction site still open towards the Port

It remains to close alone the part of the construction site that ends at the Port towards Molo Beverello. By the end of 2022, the metro line 1 in Piazza Municipio will have direct access to the Port. Also, it looks like they will be also rearranged the tram tracks on the surface up to Piazza Sannazaro.

The road system for cars and pedestrians

Therefore, with the opening of the entire station and with the new tracks, the viability will also change in this way:

  • pedestrians will pass from below, then from the metro directly towards the Port;
  • the cars will pass on the surface from via Marina towards the square.
