Piazza Municipio, the new road starts. What has changed?

Works in Piazza Municipio

The new road system regulation of Piazza Municipio in Naples is causing serious inconvenience in city traffic.
Between construction sites and route changes, drivers have to adapt quickly to new road conditions.

Where does the inconvenience for motorists arise

The recent modification of the road system in Piazza Municipio in Naples has created significant traffic problems. The opening of a new road towards the sea and the change of directions have made the journeys longer and more complicated for motorists.

For example, to reach Via Christopher Columbus starting from Piazza Municipio, now you have to walk 1,6 kilometers instead of 300 metres previous.

What has changed in the traffic

In fact, the change comes fromopening of the road that runs along the ancient moat of the Maschio Angioino, as part of a larger redevelopment project of Piazza Municipio. This also provides for theopening of the archaeological park connected to the underground station and the underpass which will connect directly with the maritime station.

Experts are predicting a major traffic chaos only for the first few days implementation of the new plan, until motorists adapt to the renewed routes.
To avoid traffic jam, the municipal police will be present in large numbers at each intersection, providing explanations on the routes and managing emergency situations.

The traffic situation is further complicated from the explosion of construction sites in view of the Neapolitan stage of Tour of Italy.
These construction sites have invaded the city and have become particularly invasive on Via Marina, which will have to accommodate the cars coming from the new chaos of Piazza Municipio.

Specifically, these are the changes:

  • The establishment of the one-way traffic along the roadway on the Castel Nuovo side, between via Vittorio Emanuele III and via Ammiraglio Ferdinando Acton.
  • For vehicles traveling along the roadway on the Castel Nuovo side, they have been introduced two new rules:
    • theobligation to turn right at the crossroads with via Ammiraglio Ferdinando Acton;
    • theobligation to give precedence to vehicles transiting on via Ammiraglio Ferdinando Acton.
  • was established one-way traffic in the carriageway between via Agostino Depretis and via Medina, in the direction of via Medina.
  • Finally, the prohibition of permanent parking with forced removal in the carriageways referred to in points 1 and 3.

Criticisms and public health concerns

The road changes have caused a stir criticism by Nino Simeone, Chairman of the traffic commission of the municipal council.

It is absurd that the city should regulate its traffic on the needs of the subway construction sites. We should first look after the needs of the citizens and then those of those who manage those eternal construction sites that have kept Naples in check for decades

Nino Simeone

Contrary voices also come from Cisl Public Function.

The whole area of the new road runs the risk of becoming a huge gas chamber. We will ask the competent Arpac and Asl to carry out the surveys concerning the smog that will be produced in the area affected by the traffic plan to protect the health of all municipal police operators and citizens

Cisl Public Function

The latter has expressed concern about the increase in smog in the area affected by the traffic plan, asking Arpac and ASL to carry out surveys to protect the health of municipal police operators and citizens.
