In view of Easter, Italian motorists have to deal with a cost increase of fuels, with the petrol that reaches and exceeds the threshold of two euros per litre. The reduction in oil production decided by OPEC+ and the increase in international prices contribute to this rise.

The causes: Opec+ and growing international quotations

Recent government analyzes of around 18 fuel distribution plants show a price of unleaded petrol per "served" that exceeds 2 euros per litre, even reaching 2,5 € in some situations, as reported by the Codacons. The cost of crude oil, which currently exceeds 80 euros per barrel, significantly affects the prices of products refined at the pump.

Economic impact on Easter trips

Consumer associations calculate a spending increase about 120 million euro for travel during the Easter holidays, due to the increase in fuel prices.

Cost of petrol and diesel in Italy

  • Self service: petrol reaches 1,872 euros per litre, while diesel stands at 1,771 euros per litre.
  • Highways: self-service petrol costs 1,937 euros per liter and petrol above 2 euros. Self-service diesel reaches 1,852 euros per liter and served diesel at 2,128 euros per litre.

Codacons: high prices on the motorway and on the smaller islands

The Codacons reports fuel prices close to 2,5 euros per liter on the highway and above 2,1 euros per liter on the smaller islands. Carlo Rienzi, president of Codacons, says that compared to the previous Easter, the cost of petrol has increased by 6,5%, with a surge in spending of around 6 euros for a full tank, which could lead to an overall increase of 120 million euros only for higher refueling costs.

Increased traffic during Easter

Based on a survey by Acs Marketing Solutions for Federalberghi, a return to pre-pandemic traffic levels is expected between Friday 7 and Tuesday 11 April, with flows mainly in a north-south and west-east direction. There will be 11,5 million Italians travelling, of which 95,6% will remain in our country.
