From April 2015 will be possible to visit also in the afternoon the suggestive Gothic Underground of the Certosa di San Martino
I Gothic undergrounds of the Certosa di San Martino of Naples were reopened to the public since January 2015, revealing to the Neapolitans a treasure that leads us into our artistic and cultural past through the exhibition of 150 works of inestimable value.
Since April 18 2015, the Sotterranei can also be visited in the afternoon, thanks to the openings which will allow you to more effectively manage the huge flow of visitors who have visited the site in recent months. Until October 25 2015, therefore, it will be possible to access the Underground not only during the morning time of 11.30, but also to 16.30. The visits are allowed, let's remember, only on Saturdays and Sundays and reservation is required, as for each day access will be allowed only to groups of no more than 50 people.
The Undergrounds of San Martino collect numerous works that have been acquired over the years through transfers, purchases and bequests, mostly occurring between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and which include ancient inscriptions, headstones, statues, sarcophagi, among the others. The route was organized both in chronological order, and goes from the Middle Ages to the eighteenth century, and following the criterion of belonging to the same urban context, therefore including works from palaces, churches and castles located in the same area of Naples.
A very suggestive visit where we can admire, for example, the prestigious sarcophagus of Beatrice del Balzo or the beautiful statue of San Francesco d'Assisi made by Giuseppe SanMartino, as well as rare inscriptions in which it is possible to read news and facts that tell about our past.
