Good Friday in Sorrento: the White Procession and the Black Procession

Like every year, this year too we will relive the tradition of Good Friday processions, i.e. the Friday preceding the Christian Easter with the historic demonstrations that take place on the street with many faithful who gather to remember the Christ's passion.

March 29, 2024, Good Friday, a Sorrento two processions will take place, the White and the Black. An event that the city always awaits with trepidation and that draws citizens and tourists to the streets. Both processions are accompanied by a musical band that plays solemn funeral marches. But let's see in detail what it is.

The White Procession

The White procession is there Procession of Our Lady of Sorrows which takes place every Good Friday at 03:00 in the morning starting from the Church of the Santissima Annunziata. The brothers of the Archconfraternity of Santa Monica wear a white habit with a black belt, with the face covered by hood.

As mentioned previously, the procession is accompanied by a musical band playing funeral marches and a group of 200 singers singing Latin verses from Psalm 50. To make everything more evocative, there will be 500 people carrying torches.

The Black Procession

The Black Procession it is the procession of the Dead Christ which starts at 20 pm from the Archconfraternity of Death in via Sersale. In this procession the brothers are dressed completely in black with his head covered by the hood. Some of them are equipped with ropes and flails, while others carry lamps.

The musical band sings funeral music by Chopin, the polyphonic choir of the Miserere recites Psalm 50 of David and implores forgiveness for all sins.

De Maio, Piazza Tasso, Via Correale , Via Rota, Via B. Capasso, Corso Italia, Piazza Tasso, Corso Italia, Via Parsano Vecchio, Via del Mare, Via Fuoro.
  • 20 hours: 00 Black procession, the route: Via Sersale, Via degli Aranci (Hospital), Corso Italia, Piazza Tasso, Corso Italia, Via B. Capasso, Via Correale, Piazza Tasso, Via San Cesareo, Via Tasso, Via V. Veneto, Via San Francesco, Piazza Sant'Antonino, Via L. De Maio, Piazza Tasso, Corso Italia. Liturgical action upon the return of the procession; blessing of the participants with the wood of the Cross.
