An unusual guided tour among the excavations of Carminiello ai Mannesi of Greek-Roman Naples

Il 26nd June and July 10 2015,Archaeological Area of Carminiello to the Mannesi, near via Duomo, the ancient heart of Naples, will guarantee some Special openings.

This precious archaeological site was discovered during the bombings of the last World War and is still not widely known today. It occupies part of the two insulae of the Greco-Roman city of Neapolis that were bounded by plateie median (height Via Tribunali) and inferior (height Via Vicaria Vecchia) and from two stenopoi (Via Duomo and Vico Zuroli) and were subdivided by a further stenopos, currently non-existent.

The area was built with gods terracing in tuff descending towards the sea. Initially it was also a place of worship, in fact they were found the remains of a temple, where then arose a church that over the centuries was modified until it was incorporated into the Church of Santa Maria del Carmine at Mannesi, renamed Carminiello for its small size.

The toponym "Mannesi" refers to the whole area where builders and repairers of wagons worked. The excavations are now finally open to visitors and are divided into rooms used for warehouses in the basement level, residential environments on the upper level, the thermal complex on two levels e the mitreo intended for the cult of the god Mithras.
