Vaccinations with AstraZeneca resume in Campania, after the brief suspension: there are no contraindications according to the Crisis Unit.
The suspension of vaccinations with AstraZeneca in Campania it lasted a few hours and it already is resumed administration to those who had booked on the appropriate platform.
Campania had decided to suspend temporarily all AstraZeneca vaccinations, for purely precautionary purposes, as we read from the site La Repubblica, following the withdrawal of batch ABV2856. The decision was made after the deaths of three military personnel in Sicily, individuals who had been vaccinated with doses of that batch, and reports of other side effects from others.
We reassure, however, that from what we learn, from the first screening on people vaccinated with those vials in Campania, which were 20 thousand between February and early March, no particular adverse reactions were reported or worrying symptoms.
The Crisis Unit, which had been called urgently, withdrew the suspension, with the exception of lots ABV2856 at the center of the investigation and which cannot yet be used. He also states that "there are currently no health contraindications to the continuation of the vaccination campaign with AstraZeneca ".
The AIFA warning: no causal link
Even if Aifa, the Italian Medicines Agency, has ordered a ban on the use of the lot, it immediately states that "currently no causal link between vaccine administration and these events has been established". The events mentioned are thromboembolytic events reported by some vaccinated.
Even EMA, the European Medicines Agency, is giving some reassurance as it has communicated that the AstraZeneca vaccine can continue to be used since "the benefits continue to outweigh its risks and the vaccine can continue to be administered while case investigations are ongoing".
Batch controls
Of course, the AIFA is carrying out all necessary checks, acquiring clinical documentation also in collaboration with the Nas and the competent authorities and the samples will be analyzed by the Istituto Superiore di Sanità.
