On Friday, September 23, 2016 , the " Flying Lantern Ceremony " will be held in the fountain square at the Mostra d'Oltremare , marking the inauguration of the second edition of the Oriental Festival . These magical lanterns, also known as Kongming lanterns , or paper hot air balloons, have a very ancient history.

The Chinese created them in the 3rd century BC for military purposes; they were used to illuminate dark areas, spread messages, or signal something. Chinese tradition today attributes a mystical value to the launching of lanterns, combining spirituality and emotional awe. All the lanterns released into the sky represent wishes and hopes that will be welcomed and fulfilled by the deities who dwell in the heavens.

Sometimes colored lanterns are used because each color has its own meaning : red, for example, indicates luck, pink friendship, purple creativity, green growth, orange evolution, blue trust, and white justice. The flame also has a mystical value, representing the knowledge through which one can reach the deities, while the light of the lanterns represents one's life path.
