For the first time, Umberto Eco's "The Name of the Rose" becomes an engaging and intense theatrical show. On stage at the Bellini Theater in Naples.

From the 21 to 26 2017 November will go on stage, al Teatro Bellini of Naples, the first Italian theatrical transposition de The Name of the Rose, the famous novel written by Umberto Eco in the 1980 and translated into well 47 languages.

The Name of the Rose, winner in the 1981 of the Strega Prize, also became a film in the 1986 directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud and starring an unforgettable Sean Connery, but it was never a theatrical show, at least in Italy. To undertake the arduous task of transforming the historical work set in the Middle Ages into stage action, is the playwright, writer and director Stefano Massini, while directing the show is Leo Muscato.

La subdivision of the novel in seven days, in turn, divided into eight chapters, corresponding to the liturgical hours of the convent (Mattutino, Laudi, Prima, Terza, Sesta, Nona, Vespri, Compieta) is, according to director Leo Muscato, already in itself theatrical, to the point to remember very much the estrangement of Brecht expressed through the signs placed on the scene to communicate to the viewer, before attending the scene, what will happen. A mode that will allow the public to focus on "how" and not on the "thing", getting to the best of the stage action.

The Name of the Rose so it will be a theater, but, as Muscato states, told "with a slight lightness that can here and there to solicit the rice, with the peace of the old friar Jorge" and that he "feeds in the spectator a perceptive dimension that leads him to forgetting, for a couple of hours, the wonderful film by Jean-Jacques Annaud ».

The Name of the Rose by Leo Muscato: a dip in the fourteenth century

To interpret the compelling events of Umberto Eco's masterpiece there will be a cast of great performers of every generation, that they will drag the audience directly in the distant fourteenth century, on the historical background of the struggle between the Church and the Empire, which has troubled Europe for several centuries.

The spectator will be in front of the story of the elderly Benedictine friar Adso from Melk, who found himself living some terrible events of which he was a witness in his youth, when he was a pupil of the Franciscan friar and former inquisitor William from Baskerville.

With the character of Adso always present on stage, as a "narrative" I ready to tell his memories and to present even a young and adolescent himself, the viewer is catapulted on stage, getting to know all the unforgettable characters in Eco's novel: Jorge da Burgos, the elderly blind friar; Bernardo Gui, the terrible Dominican inquisitor; Remigio da Varagine, a Franciscan cellarer who hides in that convent and pretends to be a Benedictine and his servant Salvatore, a friar considered stupid, who speaks a strange mixed language of Latin, vernacular, French, German and English; the fragile girl with whom the young Adso and Alinardo da Grottafferrata fall in love, the old man whose senile dementia will be decisive for the solution of the riddles.
