The rich program of events of Procida Italian Capital of Culture was finally presented on Thursday 31 March 2022 at Palazzo Santa Lucia, the headquarters of the Campania Region in the city of Naples.
The President of the Region presided over the presentation of the calendar Vincenzo De Luca, the Mayor of Procida Raymond Ambrosino and the director of "Procida 2022", Agostino Riitano.
The calendar will be incredible and will start with the grand opening on the island, while many are expected events also in Naples where monuments will turn pink.
The long program of Procida 2022
The long program provides 44 cultural projects 34 of which will be original, 150 events that will take place in 300 with 350 artists which come from 45 countries around the world.
They will be involved in the creative processes more than 2000 citizens and 7 iconic places of the island will be regenerated.
The program is divided into 5 sections with five verbs, following the single theme Culture does not isolate:
- Procida invents
- Procida inspires
- Procida includes
- Procida learns
- Procida innovates
We will start immediately with one of the greats identity rites of the island: 15th April there will be The mysteries of Good Friday which, thanks to the island's master craftsmen and the work of the new generations, provides for the setting up of artifacts inspired by the stories of the Old and New Testament that will be brought to procession through the streets of the island.
Il 29th April there will be a very original event with many origami paper boats which will cross the Gulf from Procida to Pozzuoli.

The inauguration ceremony
The opening date will be Saturday 9th April and will happen at the presence of the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella.
The event will last 7 hours in total and will depart from the mainland. The citizens of the island will be involved with theatrical performances, traveling shows and artistic installations. There will then be an institutional moment in the convent of Santa Margherita.
Here is all the very rich program of the day:
- 14.00 hours: it starts in Calata Porta di Massa, in the port area of Naples, with three shows and performances curated by Theater of the Winds. We will listen "The suspended piano"And the notes of Sky plan they will accompany the guests on the ferry to Procida. The performance will be suggestive because a piano and a pianist will be raised to three meters high, as a metaphor for music in flight. Renata Benvegnù, the young and talented pianist, will be suspended on the ship performing different musical genres: from light music to jazz, from soundtracks to contemporary music;
- 16.30 hours: in Piazza Marina Grande in Procida there will be an open air theatrical performance "Moby Dick ", directed by Stefano Tè, a work that won the Ubu Prize for the best staging. The citizens of Procida will join the 20 artists including actors, dancers, musicians and technicians who will be involved in some scenes. Previously they participated in theater workshops. There will also be the children of the inclusive Capraro di Procida Institute and the San Leonardo Polyphonic Choir. We will witness the transformation of a wagon ship into the legendary white whale even coming face to face between Ahab and Moby Dick;
- 18.00 hours: there will be Great Parade that will cross the island, between bottlenecks, climbs, descents and balconies. The Friends of Music - Procida Island Aps Music Band will participate, the students of the "Iolanda Gazzerro" Theater School of ERT / Teatro Nazionale (Modena), the waders Fenice Show Events (Milan) and many local artists;
- 19.00 hours: the traveling show starts with "Les Tambours et Poupées auteurs dans un univers aquatique"of Trans Express. It starts from Piazza della Repubblica, the heart of the island with the performance of the French company, with the support of Campania Foundation of the Festivals, to continue along via Libertà to the port of Marina Grande. There will be three giant dolls to parade through the crowd fascinating the audience with original music, popular songs and great lyrical arias together with a band of flaming drums. At the same time there will be too bright representations of fish, jellyfish and water snakes rise and float in the audience;
- 19.45 hours: the famous village of Marina Corricella hosts the extraordinary intervention of architectural visual show edited by Gio Piston e Alessandra Carloni: on houses with Mediterranean architecture the mysterious myths of the sea will take shape. The show will be repeated at 20.45pm and 21.45pm and on Sunday 10 April at 19.45pm, 20.45pm, 21.45pm and 22.45pm;
- at sunset: inauguration of a luminary curated by the artist Domenico Pellegrino for voiello at the entrance of via Vittorio Emanuele. It is the main sponsor of Procida 2022. The work evokes southern rites and traditions and represents Procida, mythological Nurse of Aeneas and incarnation of the island, as a symbol of abundance with the three typical gastronomic products of the area
- 18.40 hours: it begins the institutional ceremony with the President of the Republic in the former convent of Santa Margherita Nuova in Terra Murata with the Fanfare of the Carabinieri. There will be institutional greetings from Dino Ambrosino, Mayor of Procida, Vincenzo De Luca, President of the Campania Region, Dario Franceschini, Minister of Culture, e Agostino Riitano, Director of Procida 2022 and then the intervention of the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella;
- to follow, a report on the theme of the hope of Giovanni D'Antonio, a young 18-year-old from Campania who ranked first in Europe, and fourth in the world, among the best students of philosophy. He will speak accompanied by the music of the guitarist Osvaldo Di Dio.
The monuments of Naples are tinged with pink
Also on April 9 there will be a beautiful initiative at the same time: at 19.45 pm many monuments in Naples and Campania will light up pink which is the thematic color of Procida 2022. This initiative represents the importance and resonance of the project throughout the territory regional.
Here are which monuments will light up:
- the colonnade of the Basilica of San Francesco di Paola in Piazza del Plebiscito in Naples;
- Castel Sant'Elmo in Naples;
- the Temples of Paestum;
- the Royal Palace of Caserta;
- the Arch of Trajan in Benevento;
- the Marchionale Castle of Taurasi.
Enhanced and free buses in Procida
To make it easier for citizens and tourists to participate in the many events that will be scheduled, it will be the public transport system was also enhanced.
Also, from 9 April all the buses on the island can be used free of charge.
