After the fire that hit it hard in July, destroying the wooden steps, precisely on the 16th, theFlavian Amphitheater reopened to the public on August 5, 2021 with free admissions for anyone throughout the month.
The idea of making access free is a sort of small compensation for the inconveniences of the past few weeks and will certainly be an incentive for everyone to get to know this jewel of the Phlegraean area.
Ad August, therefore, we have a wonderful opportunity to visit this very important archaeological site that represents the third largest Amphitheater of Italy after the Colosseum of Rome and the Amphitheater of Santa Maria Capua Vetere.
The visitable areas of the Amphitheater
The race against time to return the site to visitors was fast and finally we can already return to its environments, even if it is not yet possible to visit everything. In fact, some areas remain confined due to ongoing investigations and also the arena is off limits to the public.
Despite these limitations, the public can visit the basements and the external perimeter areas where there is also the exhibition and multimedia "projections".
In the meantime, all the operations that will make the Amphitheater fully accessible to all will be completed.
The beautiful archaeological site
The Flavian Amphitheater is a beautiful example of Roman architecture, as mentioned, the third largest built by this people in the first century AD It could host up to 40 thousand spectators and mainly the competitions between gladiators.
It had a velarium, that is, a mobile cover in fabric to shelter from the rain or even from the sun when it was very hot. Currently in the underground there are still the remains of the gears used to lift and transport the cages with the animals into the arena.
In the fourth century. AD probably would have prepared the martyrdom of San Gennaro, which then took place in Solfatara. For this reason, a church was built in 1689 which was then destroyed and replaced by a chapel that can still be seen in part today.
Mandatory Green Pass for entry
To access the site, from 6 August is it is mandatory to show the Green pass with an identification document. This is valid for people aged 12 and over.
