A journey through Italian history from the 20s to today and a special section dedicated to Naples in the Istituto Luce exhibition at the Convent of San Domenico Maggiore.

He arrives in Naples, in the suggestive Convent of San Domenico Maggiore, from 9 November 2017 to 11 March 2018, the exhibition LUCE - The Italian Imaginary in Naples, a real journey into the imagination of Italy from the '20 to today, starting from our most recent past, when the country we lived in was very different from how we know it, in our days, through images and videos of the Istituto Luce archive.

In the hall of Refectory of the Convent of San Domenico Maggiore it will therefore be possible to participate in an extraordinary and unique cultural moment, knowing the history of the Istituto Luce and, consequently, the history of Italy and of the Italians, among hundreds of black and white and color movies e over five hundred photographs that will allow us to relive places, situations and worlds apparently distant but in which everyone can recognize their own personal and collective history.

Among photographs printed on illustrated magazines, newsreels and documentaries projected in the "cinemas", in the squares and in the schools, the Istituto Luce contributed from 1924, the year of its foundation, to date, to the formation of a collective imagination of our country that, in the years 20 did not yet have access to information and knowledge of the world. Thanks to cinema and photography, Istituto Luce showed for the first time, in a country still divided by dialects and cultures and unified for only sixty years, geography, politics, science, nature and all aspects of modernity .

The exhibition, conceived and realized by Istituto Luce-Cinecittà, is promoted by the Councilorship for Culture and Tourism of the City of Naples and is curated by Gabriele D'Autilia (scientific curator and texts) and by Roland Sejko (artistic curator and video director ).

Light, the Italian imagination, the history of Naples from the 20s to today

As has happened in the cities where the exhibition has already been exhibited, Rome, Matera, Mantua, Catania and Buenos Aires, there will also be a section in Naples dedicated entirely to the host city. Napoli it will therefore be the main focus of the exhibition, told to visitors through documentaries, photographs and video installations.

They will be able to watch unique and rare films dedicated to Naples, like Adolf Hitler driving through Piazza del Plebiscito in the 1938, the fall of the Mussolini government, but also Totò, both on the set of his films and in his private life, the De Filippo brothers, the alleys and the streets of the city, in an exciting historical journey that tells the evolution of Naples from the 20 to today.
