As per pure Neapolitan tradition, the miracle of San Gennaro it constantly attracts thousands and thousands of faithful to the Cathedral of Naples, all hoping that the liquefaction of the blood will occur.

What does it mean when San Gennaro's blood melts?

The liquefaction of San Gennaro's Blood is an auspicious omen, if it does not occur in any of the 3 attempts during the day, then it is popular belief that some serious form of misfortune on the city.

Has the blood melted?

This morning the faithful gathered for the attempt on Monsignor From Gregorio of 9:55, when the display case containing the ampoule was discovered.
The attempt was immediately successful, the blood has melted already upon exiting the display case.

The other attempts at 16pm and 30pm they will therefore not be carried out.

What happened when it didn't melt

One of the most recent occasions when the blood didn't melt was December 16, 2020, in the middle of the Covid pandemic the blood didn't melt. The epidemic had already been underway for several months, but just at that time it regained strength due to the Christmas holidays which was followed by the crisis in the Conte government.

Previously the miracle did not occur in 1980, the year in which, unfortunately, the very serious episode of the earthquake in Irpinia.

Even in September of 1973 the blood did not melt and Naples was in the midst of a cholera epidemic, with 911 hospitalizations in 10 days at the Cotugno hospital in Naples.

What are the dates when the miracle occurs

There are two main dates, that of September 19th, the day in which the martyr was beheaded in 305 AD and that of 16th December, anniversary of the eruption of Vesuvius in 1631. Popular belief associates San Gennaro with the stop of the eruption, stopping a few meters from the statue of the saint.
