Rare hybrid solar eclipse on April 20: what it is and how to see it from Italy

Il 20 April 2023 you will have the opportunity to observe ahybrid solar eclipse, a rather rare astronomical event visible only in some parts of the world. Furthermore, it will also be possible to admire it through streaming platforms.

This solar eclipse starts like ring finger at dawn, it becomes total and then rreverts to being annular at sunset. This happens since the shadow of the moon it does not touch the curved surface of the Earth at its extreme points, i.e. sunrise and sunset. Viewers will have the opportunity to enjoy a double show, observing both the complete coverage of the solar disk and the effect of the "ring of fire" that leaves the external part uncovered.

What is a hybrid solar eclipse

A hybrid solar eclipse is a fairly rare phenomenon that occurs when the combination of the lunar orbit and the earth's rotation causes the apparent angular diameter of the Moon to be just sufficient to totally cover the disk of the Sun at the peak of the eclipse. The areas of the Earth located along the Sun-Moon line they see the eclipse as total.

Is it possible to see the eclipse from Italy?

The eclipse will be fully visible only in some areas of theAustralia, the Democratic Republic of East Timor and Indonesia. In other areas of Southeast Asia, Australia, the Philippines and New Zealand, the phenomenon will manifest itself partially.

In Italy will not be able to observe the eclipse directly, but it will be possible to follow the online broadcast. The partial eclipse will start at 3:34 am Italian time, while the hybrid one will start at 4:37 am. The second annular phase will take place at 7:56 and end at 8:59.
