Thanks to the ongoing restoration, it will be possible to visit the large artisan complex of the ancient tannery in the excavations of Pompeii!
THEancient tannery in the archaeological excavations of Pompeii is one of the largest and most important sites and at the moment it is being restored thanks to the collaboration between the Archaeological Park of Pompeii and UNIC - Italian Tanneries, who sponsored the project.
It is located in the famous alley of the Conciapelle, a road that suffered extensive damage during the bombings of 1943 that hit the excavations, but which is being rearranged thanks to this project. At the same time, obviously the works are also concerning the rooms where the tanning of hides took place , banquet hall (the so-called summer triclinium), the place where guests were welcomed.
The visits to the complex and the laboratories
This large handicraft complex of Pompeii, a truly large facility where skins were worked and the main one found throughout the ancient city, may be visited shortly in the Regio I.
In addition, an interesting one will also be set up didactic-exhibition set-up in which visitors will be able to understand how the leathers were processed and which will also show off original tools used in antiquity.
The tannery in ancient Pompeii
The great building was found at the end of the 800th century in the aforementioned Regio I area, in Insula 5, and was built towards the middle of the XNUMXst century AD in place of an even older house. It is so big that it occupies almost all the space of the Insula. In 62 AD an earthquake damaged it, but the important subsequent restorations made it even more efficient and gave it its current appearance.
The various stages of leather processing took place in different environments and the real tanning involved 5 cylindrical tanks. Then, the skins were beaten below the porticoed area and worked in other small rooms east of the peristyle
