What is the Casatiello Easter cake

l Casatiello is a typical sweet of the bell Easter tradition, particularly widespread in the Phlegraean area and, in recent years, has obtained the brand De.Co (municipal denomination of origin) in Monte di Procida.

The exact is not known historic moment in which the Casatiello originated, but one could hypothesize a connection with the Greco-Roman era. This dessert features several variants in the provinces of Campania, including Casatiello, Pigna and U Pizz Palumm.

La prescription traditional involves the use of sourdough, while the others ingredients vary in relation to the agro-food resources of the territories of origin.

Il Casatiello Dolce, donut-shaped, represents the crown of thorns of Christ. Its name derives from the Latin word "caseus” (cheese), perhaps referring to the spring cakes of pagan festivals. In Christian iconography, the pine cone symbolizes the death and resurrection of Christ, while "U pizz palumm" (piece of dove) recalls the dove of the Holy Spirit.
