Origins of the Palace

This historic palace was built in the 1630 in Posillipo commissioned by Donna Anna, wife of the Viceroy, Duke of Medina de las Torres. It was Cosimo Fanzago who realized the project which included two entrances, one from the sea and one from a road that ran along the sea of Posillipo. The project it was never completed due to the untimely death of Donn'Anna in 1648 during the revolt of Masaniello and the fall of the Spanish viceroy which saw the viceroy flee to Madrid.

The Palace, never brought to an end, has retained its charm over time and every day at sunset gives the citizens evocative images. Over the years it has had several owners and was a crystal factory, a hotel, the headquarters of the Bank of Italy and today is used as a private home.

Legends related to the Palace

During the visit the guide will tell some legends handed down over the years. It is said that inside the palace there is the ghost of the young Mercedes de las Torres, who mysteriously disappeared after kissing, during a theatrical scene, Gaetano di Casapenna, lover of the viceregina Anna Carafa.

One of the stories told on which there are so many shades of mystery concerns the queen Joan of Anjou who met her lovers in this palace choosing them from the local fishermen and after a night of passion she killed them at dawn making them fall from the palace. Legend has it that the poor souls of these young people roam the dungeons and emit heartbreaking lamentations.
