The Naples Aquarium has reopened to the public after a long time and precisely on the occasion of World Oceans Day, June 8, 2021. This is an important milestone because within the Anton Dorhn station, right where Aquarius is, have been going on for years scientific research projects on habitats and marine species.

The Naples Aquarium, inside the Villa Comunale, is the oldest in Italy and consists of 180 cubic meters of water in 507 square meters with 19 tanks, 9 different habitats and 200 between animal and plant species.

The Aquarium of the Anton Dohrn Zoological Station

Our aquarium is the first public aquarium in the country, inaugurated in the 70s, precisely in 1874, and is one of the oldest in Europe, with great historical and scientific value.

As mentioned, it is not just a place of "leisure", but one research station mainly dedicated to the fauna and flora of the Mediterranean, especially to the ecosystems and biodiversity of the Gulf of Naples.

It was founded in 1872 by Anton Dohrn, who gives its name to the structure, a naturalist and zoologist thanks to which it was possible to proceed directly to the observation of the sea, to the dissemination and to the funding of research. The idea came to him after visiting the Berlin Aquarium and he thought that thanks to the receipts of the tickets it was possible to finance the research work on animal and plant species.

What to see in the Aquarium

The visit to the Aquarium will take us to the discovery of our sea, from the coast to the open sea between Posidonia, caves, ravines, the coralligenous of the abyss, the pelagic environment, among the species of Mediterranean rocks and between alien species. Very interesting is the munario, a place where the moray eels were raised by the Romans and which is also located in the Protected Marine Area of Gaiola.

A novelty is the tub with octopus, which has a life cycle of two years and is very intelligent, almost like mammals.

The Darwin Dohrn Museum in the Villa Comunale

Inside the Villa Comunale also opened the Darwin Dohrn Museum dedicated to the theory of evolution. You can visit the educational museum, an open-air cinema will be organized on the lawn and contains works d'pictorial art, sculptures, biological finds and historical instruments.
