The 76-year-old woman suffered from a very serious pathology which gradually led her to the blindness for over 5 years.
With an operation never performed before in Italy, she managed to recover 6 tenths of sight with an intervention lasting half an hour, a true miracle of science.

Who operated and how the operation took place

It was the woman who operated Luigi Fontana, director ofOphthalmology of the IRCCS Policlinico Sant'Orsola of Bologna.
The transplant has something exceptional because it was not a transplant from a donor, but a “ was usedartificial cornea“, a sort of small contact lens which, during the operation, was placed in such a way as to be able to adhere to the corneal wall.

The endothelial prosthesis is made of material polymetric, something similar to plastic we could say.
A true masterpiece of science, the hundredth case in the world.
