From Wednesday 16 November 2022, in underground cavea of the Sansevero Chapel Museum in Naples you can visit the beautiful exhibition In Vitro Humanitas by the Venetian artist Mauro Bonaventura.

In particular, the exhibition will include the display of two human bodies made with the lampwork glass technique which will be in contact with the two famous Eighteenth-century anatomical machines. The suggestive exhibition will be open to visitors until 30 January 2023, during the same opening hours to the public as the Museum.

Past and present interacting

The Sansevero Chapel in Naples is one of the best known and most visited museums in the city, inside it contains truly wonderful works of art such as the Veiled Christ by Giuseppe Sanmartino, the anatomical machines of Prince Raimondo Di Sangro and for a few days also the contemporary installations by Mauro Bonaventura.

These are two large vitreous bodies:

  • Flying, flamboyant red, is released in the air imitating the Diver of Paestum
  • Homo erectus, positioned between the newsstands of the Anatomical Machines

Glass is at the center of the works of art, a truly precious material not only for Mauro Bonaventura, but also for Raimondo Di Sangro himself who, for his alchemical experiments, had “a furnace in the shape of that of the vetraj, but of a particular construction”, with which he was able to devote himself to the coloring of glass.
