The US photographer Witkin for the first time in Naples with an exhibition on his best shots in black and white
Joel-Peter Witkin is one of the Masters of photography and his gallery will be on display at the Pan di Napoli until 20 October 2013. The exhibition was presented by the Alinari Brothers Foundation for the History of Photography, with the collaboration of the Baudoin Lebou Gallery in Paris, and collects 55 shots by the American photographer.
The photographs, all in black and white, immortalize moments that start from the '70s up to today. Each photograph is a tribute to a great artist of the past and has been elaborated by mixing different styles, ranging from Greek and Roman sculpture to Baroque and Neocalstic art, as well as modern art.
We can admire tributes to painters such as Goya, Bosch, Velazquez, Caravaggio, Botticelli, Max Beckmann, and photographers like Muybridge, Rejlander and HollandDay. Wirkin, moreover, is of Neapolitan origins (his grandmother was born in Naples) and most likely this is why in his DNA there is a special passion for drama.
In his shots you can read a very personal interpretation of life, in which it "mixes with death, religious restlessness with spiritual research and glory of the human body to misery ". All this can be deduced from his shooting and printing technique, which he considered fundamental. In fact, there is a frequent use of filters and distortions between the support and the enlarger, as well as changes to photos in the darkroom, with scratches or tears of the negatives.
The exhibition is part of the broader program of events in Naples, September More.
