The Crater of the Astroni, located in the Municipality of Pozzuoli, dates back to about 4.400 years ago. After various historical vicissitudes, in 1969 the Ministry of Agriculture and Forests recognized the area as WWF Oasis for the protection of fauna.

The biodiversity of the Astroni Crater Oasis is remarkable and offers a panorama of fauna e plant species of rare beauty. The area is home to numerous species of birds, like the herons, which find shelter in the protected environment of the reserve. At the same time, different birds of prey are present and contribute to the balance of the ecosystem.

The Oasis is also home to several species of amphibia e reptiles, often linked to the wetlands present in the territory, while a variety of mammals, including wild boar, deer and roe deer, inhabit the reserve. Finally, a rich diversity of invertebrates contributes to the biodiversity of the area. In addition, there is a path with gigantic statues of Dinosaurs each accompanied by information panel concerning their history.

With regard to the plant species, the Oasis of the Astroni Crater presents a mosaic of scents and colors and a unique phenomenon of vegetation inversion: the tree species are arranged inversely with respect to altitude, with the Mediterranean maquis at the top and the mountain species, such as the chestnut tree, at sea level.
