Lockdown throughout Italy: the red zone hypothesis returns throughout the country

Doctors invoke the red zone for all of Italy: total lockdown is necessary. Here is the hypothesis being examined by the Government.

Waiting to know the fate of our Region and that, therefore, the Government communicates whether Campania will remain in the yellow zone or will be included among the regions in the orange or even red zone, the doctors sound the alarm and call for a total lockdown for the whole of Italy. A decision of this magnitude could be taken by the Government on Sunday 15 November 2020.

Indeed, in the opinion of many doctors, it will be necessary declare the whole country red zone if not, there will soon be a significant decrease in the epidemiological curve.

We specify that it is only about hypothesis at the moment, but definitely the conditions in our healthcare system are being challenged and, according to estimates, if the infections do not begin to decrease, it could be even more difficult to guarantee beds for hospitalization and adequate care.

The general lockdown: the alarmed appeals of doctors

From many quarters there are requests to transform all of Italy into a red zone. The Gimbe Foundation, the Association of Hospital Resuscitators (Aaroi), the presidency of the Federation of Medical Orders, the regional nurses' organizations say they are alarmed and turn to the Government.

We read on Today that a government source allegedly told AGI that the situation will be monitored very carefully over the next 10 days and that, if even more regions were to be declared a red zone and the contagion curve were to worsen even more, even more restrictive measures for the whole country would not be excluded.

One of the first requests for greater attention came from Filippo Anelli, president of the National Federation of Medical Orders, even if it is almost the entire medical sector that is united and even invokes the total closure even for 6-8 weeks.

The decisive date: November 15th

According to the medical federations, decisions are very late and you could risk having to decide who to treat and who not as there could be no beds for everyone. This is claimed by Carlo Palermo, national secretary of Anaao Assomed, the union of hospital doctors, supported by the president of the Association of hospital anesthetists (Aaroi) Alessandro Vergallo. The latter fears that the number of people admitted to intensive care will double.

This is why, as some newspapers including La Stampa hypothesize, the Government could take the decision to declare Italy as a red zone as early as November 15. This is the date that the Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte wants to wait to evaluate the effectiveness of the measures of the last DPCM that divides theItaly in different colored bands depending on the severity of the effects of the pandemic.

The need to stop the contagion curve

Filippo Anelli strongly supports the importance of changing the curve because "the data tells us that if it doesn't cool down, in 30 days we will have about another 30 thousand people in hospital, resuscitations would exceed 5 thousand seats occupied and even, if the trend were to be that of the last week, we could count 10 thousand more deaths. We cannot afford this".

Furthermore, it could be risky to wait until November 15 to decide why, even if the curve slows by that day, hospital saturation may come sooner.

The importance of respecting the rules

For all these reasons and for to protect our health and that of the most fragile people around us, it is of fundamental importance that each of us respects the safety rules to limit the infections from Coronavirus. We always wear the mask, outdoors and indoors.

We pay particular attention when we are indoors, we make sure that the environments are ventilated and we always keep the safety distance of at least one meter. Even outdoors we do not create gatherings. We often sanitize our hands and we avoid meeting people who do not live together as much as possible, unless strictly necessary.
