The history and treasures of the Maschio Angioino
Its history is long and troubled: the construction works began in 1279 under the reign of Charles I of Anjou and continued for several years.
Given its strategic position, it was not only considered a royal residence, but also and above all a fortress to defend against the enemies of the Kingdom. Its name "Castel Nuovo" derives from the Latin "Castrum Novum", an appellation that was immediately given to it to distinguish it from the oldest castles in the city, namely Castel dell'Ovo and Castel Capuano
During the reign of Roberto d'Angiò it became a cultural center, but with the Aragonese it assumed a more modern form becoming definitively a fortress.
Today, as we know, its use is cultural and within it there is also the civic Museum which comprises:
- Armory room;
- the Palatine or Santa Barbara Chapel;
- the first and second floors of the southern curtain;
- the Carlo V Room;
- the Hall of the Loggia.
