Robo-taxi and driverless bus in Naples: the innovative mobility experiment starts

A nice result for Napoli what we want to tell you about: our city has placed itself in first place among Italian cities in the selection of the Pnrr call for Maas projects.

These are those projects defined as Mobility as a service which are part of the initiative of the Ministry for technological innovation and digital transition and by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Sustainable Mobility which aim to finance projects on sustainable mobility and using modern and cutting-edge technologies.

Naples came in first place in this announcement and the precise ranking is:

  • Napoli with 86 points;
  • Milan with 85 points;
  • Rome with 82 points.

In this way they will be allocated 2,5 million euros for technological platforms and 800 thousand euros for technological modernization of companies that deal with transport in the city.

For these projects, the Municipality has also applied for the construction of a Living Lab to develop innovative experiments.

Among the projects in progress there are those that involve the creation of taxi driven by robots need driverless bus.

They really look like science fiction ideas, but they could become reality thanks to these PNRR funds that will come.

The project that includes these ideas was presented by the Municipality of Naples in December and was approved by the Manfredi Board. These innovative means of transport, the aforementioned taxis and buses:

  • will always be punctual;
  • they will work automatically;
  • they will open and close the doors to pick up and drop off passengers;
  • they will drive in traffic respecting distances and speeds;
  • they will respect the traffic lights.

These autonomous buses and robo-taxis will be equipped with advanced driver assistance systems with the specific application for public transport.

Technological innovations in transport

Thanks to these funds, Naples will be able to experiment with truly innovative solutions and integrate with each other more other modes of transport as:

  • e-bikes;
  • car sharing;
  • more modern buses;
  • taxi

Will be created brokerage platforms to give travelers the opportunity to use numerous services such as:

  • travel planning;
  • ticket booking;
  • the payment.

Theaccessibility by improving access and use of means of transport for the weakest and for the disabled.

The experimentation will start from Naples

At first this experimentation it will involve Naples, but in a second moment will affect the rest of Campania.

When new services are implemented, users in the city will be able to move more easily and transport will be more efficient for the city and the province.
