40 years after the terrible earthquake that hit Irpinia in 1980, it is a must to stop and remember the victims and the tragedy of those moments. Here are the initiatives.

Today i 40 years after the tragic earthquake that struck Irpinia on November 23, 1980 and which also had negative effects in the provinces of Naples and Potenza.

Four decades after this event, i Irpinia municipalities will follow a minute of silence in memory of the victims and the devastation that occurred. A minute when everything will stop, just at the same time, the 19.34, in which there was the first shock. They were 90 seconds of panic and drama for an earthquake it caused 3000 victims and made entire municipalities disappear.

Irpinia, and with it all of Campania, but also Basilicata, were traumatized and, unfortunately, there has never been a real recovery.

The initiatives 40 years after the earthquake

in 118 municipalities of Irpinia there will be, as mentioned, a minute of silence and the lights will go out as a sign of mourning. Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi was one of the most affected municipalities and, right there, at 19:34 pm a carabiniere trumpeter in full uniform will sing the notes of silence. Afterwards, there will be mass in the Cathedral.

The initiative started in Avellino "Irpinia earthquake, 40 years later”Which foresees, by Poste Italiane, the philatelic cancellation and the commemorative postcard in a special edition. Furthermore, in the morning, the “Parco della Memoria” was inaugurated. The roots of the future ”, in Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi.

The words of Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte

Giuseppe Conte sent a letter to the mayor of Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi, Marco Marandino, recalling the terrible earthquake. These are his words: "Forty years later, we must remember that disastrous earthquake. The initiatives she announced for the anniversary of 23 November serve a to preserve the memory of the almost three thousand victims and of the entire villages that were destroyed. Reconstruction, as is well known, was slow and difficult, but today your territory shows the signs of a great commitment to rebirth and growth".
