An impossible exhibition in San Domenico Maggiore, works by Leonardo, Raffaello and Caravaggio

Masterpieces by Leonardo, Raffaello and Caravaggio exhibited for the first time in San Domenico Maggiore for the event “An impossible exhibition”.

The marvelous monumental complex of San Domenico Maggiore will host the evocative exhibition Una mostra impossibile from 3 December to 21 April 2014 for the Maggio dei Monumenti (May of Monuments); from 1 June to 31 August for the Forum of Cultures.

For the first time in the history of art, a true miracle will unfold: 117 paintings and frescoes by three world-renowned masters—Leonardo, Raphael, and Caravaggio—will be displayed in a single space , at a 1:1 scale and in ultra-high resolution. This evocative and enchanting "impossible exhibition" is made possible by technology and the potential of "digital reproducibility," demonstrating how humanistic culture can leverage the use of new digital technologies, benefiting especially in terms of dissemination.

In fact, even though they are copies and not the originals, until April it will be possible to visit the convent of San Domenico Maggiore and admire, in chronological order, the most famous masterpieces in the history of art, reproduced on life-size backlit panels , with an incredibly realistic effect that amplifies the perception of a real painting.

The project "The Impossible Exhibitions – The Work of Art in the Age of Digital Reproduction ," conceived and directed by Renato Parancandolo, with scientific direction from Ferdinando Bologna, has been touring Italy for several years and even around the world, from Chicago to Malta. The initiative's goal is to make artistic masterpieces accessible to everyone, including those who, for financial or logistical reasons, cannot admire the originals scattered around the world. So, why not rely on reproductions and, indeed, learn to protect, enhance, and perfect them?

With these premises, An Impossible Exhibition was born , allowing all visitors to witness, indeed, the impossible. To admire, in the same day, works such as Leonardo's Mona Lisa and The Last Supper , Raphael's Madonna of Foligno , and Caravaggio's Cardsharps.

The event is organized under the high patronage of the President of the Republic, is sponsored by the Forum of Cultures and is organized by Rai, the Municipality of Naples, Polo Pietrasanta with the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Education and the Academy of Fine Arts.

The event will be joined by some events:

• Friday December 6 there will be a tribute to Nino Rotwith Lalla Esposito and Mimmo Napolitano
• Sunday December 8 tableaux vivants  di Caravaggio, with "The conversion of a horse" by Ludovica Rambelli
