A Pompei there will be one street named after Diego Armando Maradona, our beloved Pibe de Oro, and to make it official was the mayor of the city, Carmine Lo Sapio, after the resolution of the municipal council. It will replace the current Via Vittorio Emanuele III.

It is a street that was already appealed in this way by the inhabitants of the area, but from now on calling it that will also be officially corrected. And the street of Pompeii where the mural dedicated to Maradona is located and which was presented during the Pompeii Street Art Festival.

A further tribute to the Napoli champion who helped give the team and the city two championships in the 80s.

Who created the work dedicated to Maradona

The mural located in what will become Via Diego Armando Maradona was made by a argentine artist, Big Bagnasco, therefore countryman of Diego. The great work was done on a facade of the Luigi Leone school and represents the footballer with the Argentina shirt worn during the 1990 World Cup.

There is, however, a small difference compared to the original kit: instead of the technical sponsor there is the logo of Calcio Napoli. A perfect mix between Naples and Buenos Aires, an idea much appreciated by fans and onlookers who saw the mural. Even the center forward Careca he was present at the inauguration and was delighted to see his former teammate honored once again.

Maradona's link with Pompeii

The inhabitants of Pompeii, especially the young people of the 80s now more than adults, fondly remember the deep bond between their city and Maradona. The Argentine champion, in fact, met several times the children welcomed in the educational centers of the Sanctuary of Pompeii and once invited 120 to the stadium of Fuorigrotta, in Naples (today named after him) to attend a charity match.

Furthermore, he donated a ball and a shirt to the Assunta Ponzo institute with the number 10 autographed and often gave gifts to the little ones "dribbling microphones and cameras". Salvatore Carmando, the historic masseur from Maradona revealed that "Every Christmas he went to the orphans of Pompeii to give away games and make donations to the structure".
