The life of humble inhabitants
Compared to the findings that are generally made in Pompeii, which concern rooms full of frescoes with wonderful triclinia, prestigious works of art, beautiful gardens and atriums, the slave room is striking for the humility of its rooms.
In a few square meters they were enclosed the poverty and hardship of that family. We can still admire it today because it incredibly remained intact despite the eruption, the portico did not collapse and the lapilli stopped right at the threshold.
Over the years, as we know, many have acted in Pompeii grave robbers looking for items to steal, and this room was also hit. In fact there are still holes in the walls left by these people and damage to objects, but thanks to plaster casts and other techniques we will try to integrate the gaps experienced by this passage.
The composition of the room
The slave room contains three cots positioned in a horseshoe shape and with different measures. The smallest was for a child and is about one meter and forty long. These humble beds were built with a "modularity system”Which allowed them to be lengthened or shortened. In place of the mattress was a rag of fabric on a net of ropes.
I walls of the room are bare and painted a little white. Near the window was a lamp used to amplify the glow of the fire, according to the prevailing hypothesis. A was found under a bed basket, perhaps used to store some personal effects. There is also one small pitcher which perhaps contained water to be used at night.
In any case, these objects will be analyzed in the laboratory and more precise hypotheses can be made about their use.
Work items
Many work items were also found in the room. On the small bed was the great rudder of the chariot, a wooden object patched with string. In the center of the room was one case with metal corners inside which the horse harnesses.
Of all these objects plaster casts were made to better understand their shapes and use.
