The Basilica

The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore at Pietrasanta is the oldest in Naples, just think that it was built in the sixth century as an early Christian basilica. It is said that Pope Evaristo was buried in this place. The name "Pietrasanta" derives from the fact that one is kept inside stone that granted indulgence to those who kissed it. The current church, on the other hand, was built, in a Baroque style, between 1653 and 1678 on a project by Cosimo Fanzago. Over the years it had suffered a lot of damage (such as those caused by bombing during the Second World War) and although everything was done to restore it, its closure was decided twenty years ago.
