At the Diocesan Museum of Naples will be on display the collection The icons of the Mother of God, rare Russian tables for the first time to be visited by the public

The Diocesan Museum of Naples will host, until the 5 April 2014, a very special exhibition, entitled The icons of the Mother of God.

This is a collection, owned by Intesa San Paolo, of ancient Russian icons on the Virgin Mary, the Mother of God, and dedicated to the festivities of the Ortodox church. Furthermore, it will include a series of more traditional representations of Mary, always inspired by Catholic holidays.

The tables will be exhibited in the choir of the nuns of the church of Santa Maria Donnaregina Nuova and will be 48 in total (30 orthodox icons and traditional 18) and are dated between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries. The collection will be open to visitors for the first time by the public and will show a type of religious art, inspired by the oriental canons, which is rarely seen in a museum.

This collection of icons is among the most precious present in the West, both for size and for the rarity of the specimens, and its opening to the public, offered by the museum of Largo Donnaregina, proves to be an unmissable opportunity.
The exhibition was also promoted by the Archdiocese of Naples and the "Friends of the Museums of Naples" Association.
