Chagall he was able to get closer to the printing techniques and to illustrations in the XNUMXs thanks to the publisher Paul Cassirer and Vollard, who encouraged him towards the etching technique and who commissioned him the illustrations for The dead souls of Gogol, the hundred etchings for The fables of La Fontaine and, from the 1931 to the 39, the one hundred and five illustrations for the Bible.

The artist soon discovered the expressive potentialities of graphic illustration, of printing (both in hollow and flat), of lithography and of the particular use of color that these means needed. Thus, in the '50' years, in the Parisian printing house of Fernand Mourlot, most of the works realized with these techniques were born. Those that show it Marc Chagall.
