The saga of public transport in Naples continues, and it is there Metro Line 6 to occupy the attention of citizens and authorities.
Closed for almost a decade, looked close to reopening in 2024. Sadly, the delays seem to have no end: an unexpected technical obstacle could compromise the deadline and put European funds at risk.

The trains that will travel on Line 6: how many are the old ones and the new ones

The six original trains, dated 1990, were intended for revolutionize city transportation on this line. According to forecasts, and perhaps hopes, Line 6 should finally reopen in June 2024 with these historic convoys.

Incredibly, more than three decades after their commissioning, four of the original six trains are still in service. Line 6, in these conditions, appears to be a sort of "museum on rails" rather than a transport service.

In addition, four new trains with new models they should reach Naples in 2025, further modernizing the fleet.

The test fails: the wheels must be replaced but they are out of production

During the commissioning tests, a surprising technical problem emerged: the elastic wheels of the old trains they shattered.
The crux of the matter is that such wheels they are now out of productionfurther complicating replacement procedures. That's why the option of was considered use the wheels of the Genoa subway, compatible with Neapolitan trains.

How much does the repair cost and possible solutions

The sore point comes from the economic side: 1,6 million euro they will be needed for wheel replacement. These funds will be disbursed by the Municipality to the company Hitachi Rail STS, the responsible dealership.
The green light to the new tests is scheduled for mid-Novemberunless there are further impediments.

The schedule of technical tests

The evidence is divided into the following passaggi:

  1. Preparatory activities (September 2023)
  2. Trials without passengers (October 2023 – January 2024)
  3. Intensive testing (February 2024 – June 2024)

How are the works on the sections progressing?

For their part, the works on some sections fortunately proceed quickly. For example, the Mergellina-San Pasquale section it was completed and delivered early. THE checks for opening to the public they are ongoing and seem to be going the right way.

Forecasts on the possible reopening of Line 6

If all goes as planned, Line 6 will reopen by June 2024, as per the requirements of the European Commission.
Never already accumulated delays put this date at risk, exposing Naples to the possible loss of European funds very valuable to the city.
