A journey through the history of the plant

The Mergellina Funicular is the most recent of Naples' funiculars, inaugurated on 24 May 1931. Created to facilitate access to the expanding neighborhoods on the Posillipo hill, it has also gradually taken on a tourist vocation thanks to the panoramic view of the Gulf of Naples.

The funicular operated without problems until the 80s, when the age of the system led to numerous suspensions of service. The 1 ° July 1982, the management was entrusted to the Regional Commissioner Management.

In May 1985 modernization works have begun on the plant, which included the replacement of the historic wooden carriages and the refurbishment of the electromechanical parts, the drive and the transmission and safety system. The plant was reopened on 16 January 1986 and continued to function until May 1989, when it was closed again for the second phase of works concerning the reconstruction of the running track, completed on 27 March 1990.

Il 1 January 1999, the management of the funicular passed from ANM to Metronapoli SpA Following the merger of the transport companies into a "single company" in 2013, the integrated management of the road, rail and parking sectors, including funiculars, has returned to the Azienda Napoletana Mobilità SPA.
