How to recognize Kinder Eggs contaminated by Salmonella: the Ferrero guide

After the scandal relative to some Kinder products where the Salmonella bacterium, the company Ferrero has published an online guide to succeed in understand which lots are at risk and, therefore, don't buy them.

Recall that some lots that have been produced in Belgium, in the Arlon factory, have been withdrawn in recent days because they were considered at risk and as a precaution, of course, it was decided not to proceed with the sale.

What was the egg and egg scandal

A few days before Easter, it turned out that some Kinder products from Ferrero have caused salmonellosis (due to the Salmonella bacterium) in many consumers, mostly children. At least 150 cases have been found and most of them are children under 10 years of age.

According to EFSA and ECDC, the authorities that deal with food safety and disease prevention and control, cases were found in France, Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom and Belgium, although currently an Italian child has also felt ill in Ravenna after eating an egg.

But what exactly are we talking about? Basically, some Kinder products containing the Salmonella bacterium have been made from the offending Belgian plant. According to EFSA and ECDC, a strain of salmonella in that establishment within a buttermilk tank. At his time, the appropriate hygiene and safety measures were taken, but this did not prevent the occurrence of salmonellosis cases among consumers in March of this year with consequent public health reports by the competent national authorities to starting from the beginning of April ..

That's why it was just before Easter production authorization withdrawn in that establishment. As a result, across Europe they were withdrawn the products from the Belgian factory.

What are the products at risk and recalled

In Italy the following have been withdrawn:

  • the Kinder Surprise x6 "Chicks";
  • the Kinder Surprise Maxi 100g "Smurfs" and "Miraculous";
  • some batches of Kinder Schoko-Bons 125g and 46g expiring between May 28th and August 19th 2022

While the Kinder GranSorpresa eggs sold for Easter were not at risk because they were produced in Italy.

As posted on the Ferrero website, to recognize the lots of the Belgian plant and rest assured, it is enough:

  • check the lot number on the packaging of the Kinder Schoko-Bons and Kinder Surprise Maxi 100g "Smurfs" and "Miraculous" on the back of the package or, for i Kinder Surprise x6 “Chicks“, On the single Ovetto;
  • on each product the lot has a code starting with the letter "L";
  • the offending products are all those that have the following wording at the end of the lot number, therefore after the "L" and the three digits following it: RZ - LZ - R03 - L03.
