Very precarious situation in Via Orsi 18, in the area between Vomero and Arenella in Naples, because there is a building at risk of collapse which forced the evacuation of 36 families and the closure of 5 shops located just below the building.
The concern is great, of course, and i jobs to get everything back to normal and without risk they will take a long time, as explained by Antonio De Iesu, Municipal Councilor for Security and Municipal Police.
It all started on October 12, 2022, when a failure that frightened whoever was in the palace, but also those who walked outside, why two pillars were crushed. The assistant engineer of the condominium, who arrived on site together with the judiciary, experts, firefighters and municipal police, found that the concrete is old and crumbles in his hands.
The total closure of the front section
At first the municipal administration decided to close traffic only to heavy vehicles, so cars and scooters could circulate as usual.
Instead, the heavy vehicles had been diverted to via Niutta, piazza Muzii and via Gigante.
Unfortunately, following further investigations, the municipality had to completely close the section of the road in front given the serious risk of collapses.
Therefore transit is prohibited on Via Orsi between civic 10 and civic 26 (included) to all vehicles.
Since yesterday, a shoring operation of the portion of the building affected by the instability is underway, starting from the ground floor up to the 7th floor. Currently, the ground, 1st and 2nd floors have been shored up, while the shoring of the 3rd floor is being completed. Considering that 4 floors still have to be shored up in order to complete the "urgent and suitable protection interventions" and that further measures must be adopted to protect public safety, it should be noted that the closure of the section of via Giuseppe Orsi has been ordered from no. . number 10 (included) at n. number 26 (included), up to the presentation by the condominium of a certification by the technician in charge concerning the completion of the works and the consequent safety

Why the building is unsafe
As mentioned, a failure occurred due to the crumbling of the concrete of a couple of pillars, but there is also damage to the floors and cracks in some apartments.
According to Salvatore Cervone, assistant engineer of the condominium:
the situation of the two pillars is very dangerous, but I have reason to believe that all the concrete in the building is in the same condition. The partitions have been removed, which must be made of brittle material and must not withstand loads. Evidently, the pillar was already at the limit of resistance, and the partitions gave more support, a little more support that kept the excesses of the pillar at bay. When they removed the partitions, everything happened.
The palace was built about 70 years ago and on the roof there is one cant of 600 square meters with apartments, dating back to 30 years ago, with a demolition order never carried out for violation of architectural decor. The work of the investigators is also that of check the possible connection between the superelevation with the compromise of the pillars.
In order to know exactly its current conditions, it will be necessary to wait for the investigations that have begun to be carried out. The times will certainly be long.
Dozens of families evacuated and shops closed
Meanwhile the 36 families were evacuated and they will have to wait before they can return and the Municipality will guarantee them assistance. At the moment almost all the families have chosen an autonomous accommodation and only a couple and a student have been accommodated by the municipal administration in a hotel.
I 5 shops closed at the moment they cannot resume activity.
