The best singers of the evening duets

The French Saints and Skin are thrilling in a splendid interpretation of “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen. Also convincing are Irama who hosts Cocciante and the intergenerational duet Alfa – Roberto Vecchioni.

The worst singers of the evening duets

Sangiovanni could have done better with Aitana, The Kolors with Umberto Tozzi and Mr. Rain with the Gemelli Diversi.

Technical analysis and report cards of individual singers

Edited by Luigi Scortichini – Opera chorister, music therapist and writer.

Sangiovanni with Aitana – Butterflies and Mariposas

  • Overall impression

In general, I have little understanding of the choice of those who bring back their own song, perhaps from Sanremo, on the covers evening.
  • How did Sangiovanni sing? A technical evaluation.

Aitana adds nothing to the interpretation of the song, on the contrary... he sings with a high autotune, she with an intonation that cannot compete with a computer. The result is rather unfortunate.

    Rating: 4,5

Annalisa with La Representative di Lista and the Artemia Choir – Sweet dreams

  • Overall impression

Total black look, as did the choir (the choristers all wore black glasses).
  • How did Annalisa sing? A technical evaluation.

Pushing this song to the threshold of gospel could have been risky. In reality they were right: beautiful arrangement and excellent vocal performance by the two singers, a truly balanced duet in a subtle chase to see who does better.

    Rating: 8,5

Rose Villain with Gianna Nannini – Medley Nannini

  • Overall impression

Rose Villain in short white dress and long shawl. Nannini elegant in a masculine-cut suit.
  • How did Rose Villain sing? A technical evaluation.

A monument of Italian rock accompanies a young talent. The choice of repertoire is good, but the vocal understanding is not successful: several uncertainties in the intonation and unfortunately the attempt at harmonizing the voices fails.

    Rating: 4
  • The impact of the song on the audience

Great and affectionate tribute from the public to the queen of Italian rock.

Gazelles with Thunderbolts – Night before exams

  • Overall impression

Gazzelle does not deny itself: short wine coat over black sweatshirt; Thunderbolts in black jacket on white t-shirt.
  • How did Gazzelle sing? A technical evaluation.

Delicate and intense interpretation. They manage to convey understanding and great enthusiasm. The audience appreciates it a lot and turns into a big choir, with their cell phone torches lit.

    Rating: 7,5
  • The impact of the song on the audience

Deep final bow and big applause, in which I join.

The Kolors with Umberto Tozzi – Medley Tozzi

  • How did The Kolors sing? A technical evaluation.

Stash chases Tozzi's vocality and style and each tries to fit in with the other: the result is questionable, also due to some mismatches in the opening of the microphones. The “This is not Ibiza” ending is the only point where they coordinated perfectly.

    Rating: 5, reluctantly
  • The impact of the song on the audience

The Theater sings every word! Great affection for Tozzi.

Alfa with Roberto Vecchioni – Dream, boy, dream

  • Overall impression

Alfa hits the mark by letting himself be guided by such a great Master. You can see that he is genuinely very happy, no matter how much he jumps around on stage!
  • How did Alfa sing? A technical evaluation.

Very honest, clean and exciting interpretation. Great arrangement, with the violins in the foreground. The inclusion of the rap part is perfect for lyrics, flow, intention. Located at the end, it is definitely a coup de théatre.

    Rating: 9
  • The impact of the song on the audience

Standing ovation from Ariston and the chorus “Well done!” it is absolutely deserved.

Bnkr44 with Pino D'Angiò – What an idea

  • Overall impression

Great stage presence of the boys, all dressed in different colours. One of them has a rhinestone flower tattooed on his head: the power of Fantasanremo. The 80s disco effect is perfect.
  • How did Bnkr44 sing? A technical evaluation.

Iconic piece, printed in the collective memory, and sung with precision by Bnkr. Good job, everyone!

    Rating: 7,5

Irama with Riccardo Cocciante – When a love ends

  • Overall impression

Bringing Cocciante back to Ariston is definitely a coup. Irama is very elegant with a leather jacket and trousers.
  • How did Irama sing? A technical evaluation.

The thing that makes my eardrums happier is that Irama, to accompany the Maestro, is forced to lighten the timbre, returning to the style of his early years. The alternation of voices thus borders on perfection.

    Rating: 8,5
  • The impact of the song on the audience

Irama is very emotional during the standing ovation from the audience. Riccardo Cocciante thanks Ariston concluding with a piece of “Vivere per amore” sung a cappella.

Fiorella Mannoia with Francesco Gabbani – May she be blessed & Occidentali's Karma

  • How did Fiorella Mannoia sing? A technical evaluation.

It seems incredible but, after listening to Mariposa, we discover that each of the two could have sung the other's song as early as 2017. Great fun from both, truly the odd couple of the festival.

    Rating: 8
  • The impact of the song on the audience

    “Bless her” “Ommmmm”. Amused audience.

French Saints with Skin – Hallelujah

  • Overall impression

Very elegant vocalist in transparent black macramé knit. Skin with oversized jacket, which she then removes to reveal a very fine black silk dress.
  • How did the French Saints sing? A technical evaluation.

I can't believe my ears! The choice of the song is certainly pandering, but performed like this - with the perfect vocalism of both (praise for the final thread of Skin!) and a masterful, intense and lyrical interpretation - it is pure poetry.

    Rating: 10
  • The impact of the song on the audience

Ariston all on their feet for a well-deserved standing ovation.

Ricchi e Poveri with Paola and Chiara – Maybe because I love you and Mamma Maria

  • Overall impression

The two couples are dressed in pendant: R&P in black with sequins, P&C with two little black dresses and silver rhinestones.
  • How did Ricchi e Poveri sing? A technical evaluation.

The union is perfect: a contralto, a mezzo-soprano, a tenor and a soprano. Today we can celebrate the birth of the new Italian dance-pop quartet. No one more than the four of them together is capable of making at least three generations sing and dance.
    Rating: 7,5
  • The impact of the song on the audience

In fact, the Theater is all on its feet, celebrating. The gallery went crazy!

Ghali with Ratchopper – “True Italian” Medley

  • Overall impression

Ghali is perfect in a black dress with tulle shawl.
  • How did Ghali sing? A technical evaluation.

He begins singing in Arabic, co-directed by his alien friend Rich Ciolino. Too bad about the pushed autotune.

    Rating: 7
  • The impact of the song on the audience

The audience stands up for Toto Cutugno's “L'italiano”, almost as if it were the national anthem.

Clara with Ivana Spagna and the children's choir of the Teatro Regio of Turin – The circle of life

  • Overall impression

The "Disney princess" effect of Clara and Ivana's looks is frankly excessive.
  • How did Clara sing? A technical evaluation.

A soundtrack to an animated film that made history; here, however, it becomes so monumental and pompous, thanks to Clara's dark timbre of voice.

    Rating: 5,5
  • The impact of the song on the audience

    Public ovation for Spain.

Loredana Bertè with Venerus – My boy

  • Overall impression

Guitarist and singer both a lot of rock. She is in a white shirt (on which the red bow, symbol of the fight against violence against women, stands out), black tie and fluffy miniskirt, he is wearing a lot of make-up in a white tank top.
  • How did Loredana Bertè sing? A technical evaluation.

False start for Loredana's performance, as she did not receive the click of the metronome. He reinterprets one of his songs from forty years ago with unchanged energy, indeed, perhaps with more determination. Indomitable!

    Rating: 7
  • The impact of the song on the audience

Thanks to Pippo Balestrieri, historic stage director and soul of the festival, are a generous tribute to the workers who make the organization of such an impressive event possible.

Geolier with Guè, Luchè and Gigi D'Alessio – Medley “Strade”

  • Overall impression

“Contemporaneity of the Neapolitan style”, as Amadeus struggles to say. All in total black.
  • How did Geolier sing? A technical evaluation.

Bombproof Flow, an important arrangement that perfectly conveys certain dark atmospheres at the origin of the inspiration of the first two songs. The entrance of Gigi D'Alessio gives some breathing room to the medley.

    Rating: 7
  • The impact of the song on the audience

Great affection from the Theater for Gigi D'Alessio.

Angelina Mango with the string quartet of the Orchestra of Rome – La rondine

  • Overall impression

Mango is wrapped in a tight dress in shades of green, decidedly more sober than the previous days.
  • How did Angelina Mango sing? A technical evaluation.

He chooses a difficult song, written and performed by the unforgettable Pino Mango, his father. I find that there is a lack of delicacy and lightness in the interpretation. Too strong, too intense.

Rating: 6,5 for courage and memory
  • The impact of the song on the audience

Very exciting, the audience applauds several times in the open and at the end gives an ovation to Pino Mango.

Alessandra Amoroso with Boomdabash – Medley

  • Overall impression

Needless to say, all dressed completely in black.
  • How did Alessandra Amoroso sing? A technical evaluation.

It begins with “Le Radici Ca Teni”, a historic song in Lecce by Sud Sound System, then Boomdabash enters to accompany her in the medley, until the explosion of “Karaoke”. Comfort zones.

    Rating: 6,5
  • The impact of the song on the audience

    Everyone from Salento at Ariston!

Dargen D'Amico with Babel Nova Orchestra – Homage to Morricone

  • Overall impression

Dargen wears a gold-colored dress, with two patterns that resemble the "fs" of violins (the front openings).
  • How did Dargen D'Amico sing? A technical evaluation.

Arrangement full of pathos... until "pa pararà pararà pa pa", another self-quotation which however dampens the emotion created.

    Rating: 5,5
  • The impact of the song on the audience

Great applause at the time of the "ceasefire" call.

Mahmood with Bitti's Tenores – How deep is the sea

  • Overall impression

The Tenores in traditional dress contrast with Mahmood's very modern and sensual black silk shirt.
  • How did Mahmood sing? A technical evaluation.

A very courageous choice to bring Dalla to Sanremo. Almost as good as duetting with the Tenores. The amalgam of voices is sensational and emotional, Mahmood fits them perfectly. At the end, a vocal fragment from Lucio Dalla also overlaps, to crown a spot-on performance.

    Rating: 8,5
  • The impact of the song on the audience

The audience finds itself involved in this sea of love.

Mr. Rain with Different Twins – Mary

  • Overall impression

Gemini Diversi in black, Mr. Rain in dark green leather suit.
  • How did Mr. Rain sing? A technical evaluation.

Mr.Rain becomes the guest of Gemelli Diversi, a nostalgia operation that neither adds nor takes away anything from the original song. The quote from “Superheroes” is inevitable. The choreography of the Olympic gymnasts (the "Blue Butterflies") is a snack of cabbage, so much so that Amadeus does not understand that the performance is not over and interrupts it with the "unannouncement".

    Rating: 5
  • The impact of the song on the audience

Applause from the Gemini Diversi fans.

Negramaro with Malika Ayane – The song of the sun

  • Overall impression

Malika in an elegant black dress with a complex stiff tulle collar. Giuliano in an iridescent black suit.
  • How did Negramaro sing? A technical evaluation.

Two of the most particular and recognizable voices of Italian music come together in a delicate and exciting sound. However, the arrangement is too cumbersome and distant from the original intention of the song, so simple and light.

    Rating: 6,5
  • The impact of the song on the audience

The a cappella finale with the invitation to the audience to join in the singing is the worthy conclusion, in simplicity.

Emma with Bresh – Medley Tiziano Ferro

  • Overall impression

Emma in a long dress with a generous slit edged with feathers, Bresh is in a black dress with black sequins.
  • How did Emma sing? A technical evaluation.

The voices blend perfectly, despite some distortions, and the tribute manages to move.

    Rating: 6,5

Il Volo with Stef Burns – Who wants to live forever

  • Overall impression

This time they choose an impeccable look, although still in black.
  • How did Il Volo sing? A technical evaluation.

They hit the mark, after all it takes at least three good ones to reconstruct the unique, more than exceptional, voice of Freddie Mercury.

    Rating: 8
  • The impact of the song on the audience

The audience applauds loudly and gives a great ovation at the end.

Diodato and Jack Savoretti – Love that comes, love that goes

  • How did Diodato sing? A technical evaluation.

Filippo Timi, sitting on the stairs and wearing a shiny macramé shirt, begins surprisingly with a recited piece. Diodato interprets with all the sweetness he knows, Savoretti perhaps exceeds in energy, thanks to an overly important arrangement. The public likes it a lot.

    Rating: 7
  • The impact of the song on the audience

The public likes it a lot.

La Sad with Rector – Lamette

  • Overall impression

They are beautiful dressed as crazy doctors, complete with lab coats, stethoscopes and "fragile" tape all over their bodies. Donatella is in a black dress with silver votive hearts.
  • How did La Sad sing? A technical evaluation.

Perfect choice: pure punk, lots of energy and... lots of fun, even if not really in line with the style.

    Rating: 7

Il Tre with Fabrizio Moro – Medley “Fabrizio Moro”

  • Overall impression

The Three in a light and torn denim suit, worn next to the skin, and Moro in black, with a sports jacket.
  • How did Il Tre sing? A technical evaluation.

False start also for Il Tre: no click in the headset.
The style does not allow perfect synchronization of the words, so some inaccuracies are overlooked. Moro has a highly respectable, recognizable and exciting repertoire. Good performance, Il Tre visibly excited and amused.

    Rating: 7
  • The impact of the song on the audience

    The theater was well received.

BigMama with Gaia & La Niña & Sissi – Lady Marmelade

  • Overall impression

Four very sensual women in black dresses and lingerie.
  • How did BigMama sing? A technical evaluation.

Powerful arrangement, with the horns taking center stage. Important and precise vocals, it feels like being in a musical, unlike the Sanremo stage!

    Rating: 7,5
  • The impact of the song on the audience

Ariston likes it a lot, with applause on the final lesbian kiss.

Maninni with Ermal Meta – You didn't do anything to me

  • Overall impression

Maninni in a soft and loose all-white suit, Ermal Meta in black. I don't think I've ever seen Meta and Moro dressed in another color.
  • How did Maninni sing? A technical evaluation.

Precise and intense interpretation, the voices come together well. The touch of class is the percussion ensemble behind it, which gives that energy, that "martial" touch to an already sumptuous arrangement.

    Rating: 7,5
  • The impact of the song on the audience

    The audience applauds wildly.

Fred De Palma with Eiffel65 – Medley

  • Overall impression

Fred very elegant as usual, in black.
  • How did Fred De Palma sing? A technical evaluation.

Fred De Palma dedicates the freestyle to Amadeus ("don't talk to him about Sinner") and Fiorello ("I want to challenge him in freestyle"). Explosive ending with him running into the audience (points for Fantasanremo) and everyone dancing to “I'm blue, dabadee dabada”.

    Rating: 7,5
  • The impact of the song on the audience

    Ariston is on fire!

Renga Nek – Medley

  • Overall impression

Until now, no one had chosen not to be accompanied by a guest on the duet evening. Even Anna Oxa, who sang one of her songs anyway, called a cellist on stage last year!
  • How did Renga and Nek sing? A technical evaluation.

Although it is indeed a duet, it is not a duet. So they are unrated.
  • The impact of the song on the audience

The whole audience sings and applauds, they score points for Fantasanremo thanks to Renga who goes down to the audience, kisses her daughter Jolanda and snatches her bag.

Final ranking of the duets evening

1. Geolier with Guè, Luchè and Gigi D'Alessio
2. Angelina Mango with the string quartet of the Rome orchestra
3. Annalisa with The List Representative & Coro Artemia
4. Ghali with Ratchopper
5. Alfa with Roberto Vecchioni

When the winner was announced, Ariston exploded in boos of disapproval.
