A few hours after the return to solar time, the appeal to the government arrived and a collection of signatures was started for a possible referendum to keep summer time, which guaranteed a saving of 190 million
Tonight it will be necessary, like every last Saturday of October, move the clock hands back one hour at 3:00.
We will then sleep an hour more with the return of solar time. In the Cesarini area, however, the Chasm (Italian Society of Environmental Medicine) and the Non-Profit Consumerism to launch an appeal to government to extend daylight saving time until at least 30th November. Also they have already collected 265 thousand signatures in view of a possible referendum to keep it all year round. The reasons are linked to both economic savings and enormous benefits for the environment.
The reasons for keeping summer time all year round
This year, during the seven months of summer time, the savings for families were considerable: well 190 million of Euro. In addition, carbon dioxide emissions fell by 200 thousand tons approximately. The data made public by Terna, the company that manages the national transmission grid, demonstrate in detail the significant benefits received from March 27, 2022, the day on which daylight saving time came into force. The corresponding annual requirement of 150 thousand families or 420 million kilowatt hours.
The appeal to the government of Terna on the maintenance of summer time
In a note the company Terna calls on the government to extend daylight saving time by at least a further four weeks:
"We ask the Prime Minister today Giorgia Meloni to find a way to freeze the transition to solar time scheduled for tomorrow 29 October, thus allowing the electricity grid operator to verify in the field the real savings obtainable in economic and environmental terms".
In addition, the company headed by Stefano Donnarumma also illustrated the data on cutting CO2 emissions by ben 200 thousand tons. The benefits would therefore also be for human health and the planet as well as for the pockets of all citizens.
