Elections in Naples: when you vote, how you vote and who are the candidates

A Napoli, as in many Italian cities, the administrative elections to choose the new mayor and the related municipal council who will manage the city over the next 5 years. We also vote for the renewal of the Councils and Presidents of the 10 Municipalities.

After two terms, the current mayor Luigi De Magistris will give way to a new administrator and he will compete for the regional elections in Calabria.

In Naples, in total there are 7 candidates who will compete for the position of mayor. But let's see all the details of these elections together.

When you vote in Naples

The elections for the mayor of Naples will take place on 3 and 4 October 2021, with the eventual ballot after two weeks, on 17 and 18 October. The ballot will take place if no candidate has obtained an absolute majority of the votes.

Il 3 October the polling stations will be open from hour to hour 7.00 23.00, while the 4 October from 7.00 to 15.00. The eventual ballot will follow the same times.

How to vote

There will be two ballots, a blue one to vote for the mayoral candidate and the councilor candidate, and an orange one for the president candidate and the councilor candidate for the Municipalities.

Vote for the mayor

Separate voting is allowed and you can vote as follows:

  • for a candidate for mayor without choosing a list. In this way the vote goes only to the chosen candidate;
  • for a list and thus the vote also goes to the candidate for statutory auditor linked to the list;
  • for a candidate for statutory auditor and for a linked list, so the vote will be for both;
  • for a candidate for statutory auditor and for an unrelated list, so the vote goes to the chosen name and to the list connected to another candidate (this is the split vote).

In the event of a ballot, the vote will be taken only by choosing the name of the candidate for mayor.

Vote for the city council

40 municipal councilors will have to be chosen. You vote like this:

  • one or two preferences can be expressed. In the case of the second preference, it must be of a different sex from the first;
  • the name or names should be written on the lines to the right of each list mark;
  • in the event of a vote given to two women or two men, from the same list or from different lists, the vote will be canceled for the second preference.

Vote for the Municipalities

We vote in the following way

  • separate voting is not allowed;
  • it is possible to vote for the candidate chairman, but the vote is valid only for the candidate and not for the linked list or lists;
  • voting for a list also automatically votes for its candidate for president;
  • you can write the name of a candidate for councilor to the Municipality, but it must be on the same list as the candidate for president;
  • if a second preference is made, it must be of the opposite sex to the first one, under penalty of cancellation of the second preference on the card.

As mentioned, there are 7 candidates for the office of mayor in Naples.

Gaetano Manfredi

Gaetano Manfredi is the name chosen by the Democratic Party, by Leu and by the 5 Star Movement after a very long negotiation that led to this agreement. Catello Maresca

He is the center-right candidate for mayor. He is a magistrate, previously worked in the District Anti-Mafia Directorate (DDA) and as Deputy Prosecutor at the Naples Attorney General. His official blog to consult the electoral program.

Anthony Bassolino

Former mayor of Naples for two terms from 1993 to 2000, he was also elected twice as President of the Campania Region from 2000 to 2010. Consult the site for the election program.

Alessandra Clemente

Do you need the Green Pass to vote?

In order to vote it is not necessary to show the Green pass at the polling station.
