Feast of San Gennaro in Naples, the procession returns to the street for the May miracle

Finally, after a three-year stop, in 2019 due to bad weather and in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic, one of the most anticipated events by citizens is back, that is the procession dedicated to San Gennaro, the patron saint of the city of Naples.

As you will remember, every year, three times a year, the blood of San Gennaro is exposed in front of citizens and faithful to ensure that the miracle happens, or that liquefaction.

In particular, the official and solemn dates are:

  • The Saturday preceding the first Sunday in May
  • The 19 September
  • The December 16

The procession to be held Saturday 30 April it will precede the first Sunday in May and will be the day scheduled for the first miracle of this year.

The program of the procession for San Gennaro

La procession for San Gennaro will take place on April 30, 2022 in compliance with Covid regulations and in a reduced form.

The procession, led by the archbishop of Naples Don Mimmo Battaglia and the mayor Gaetano Manfredi, it will start at 17:00 from the Cathedral of Naples.

From here we will proceed directly to Santa Chiara where the authorities will be, thus avoiding going through the streets of Forcella.

The route will therefore be reduced compared to previous years and so will the number of participants. In procession the bust and relics of San Gennaro, with the ampoule containing the blood and the busts of the Saints Co-Patrons will not be brought.

Once they arrive in Santa Chiara, at 18:00, the faithful will find out if the miracle has happened, there will in fact be the tradition of a white handkerchief waving by a member of the Deputation.
