The public will be able to dream by attending this famous fantastic ballet in two acts on a libretto by Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges e Théophile Gautier and taken from the novel by Heinrich Heine De L'Allemagne, in which it is told the Slavic legend of the Villi and of the tormented love between Giselle and Albrecht.

Giselle it is the first magnificent example of romantic ballet, conceived by the French nineteenth-century novelist Théophile Gautier and then musiced by Adolphe-Charles Adam, one of the most famous composers of music for ballet. The choreography was entrusted to Jean Coralli, while the steps of the first dancers were instead taken care of by Jules Perrot.

La first representation of the ballet took place on the stage of the Opéra National de Paris in the 1841, with the Italian ballerina Carlotta Grisi as Giselle and with Lucien Petipa in the role of Albrecht.

Giselle, or le Villi: a romantic and suggestive Slavic legend

The plot of Giselle is inspired by legend of the Villi, (from the Slavic root Villa what does it mean to), i spirits of young unhappy death girls because betrayed or abandoned before marriage. According to Slavic mythology, these vindictive entities, not finding eternal rest in death, are forced to wander each night in search of their traitors and force them to dance to exhaustion, helping themselves with magical twigs of mistletoe.

Once dead, the Villi throw their bodies into a lake, and finally the ghost of the maiden died out of love and can be appeased and vanish.

The ballet Giselle narrates, therefore, of the impossible love story between the young farmer Giselle and the prince Albrecht, who manages to win over the vengeful spirit of the mythical Villi.
