The story tells the intense and troubled love relationship between the twenty year old Dumas and the courtesan Marie Duplessis, who died of tuberculosis just 23 years in the 1847. Marie, who in the work is called Violetta Valery (Marguerite Gauthier in the French novel), was one of the most desired courtesans in Paris and her love story with Alexandre Dumas son, which in the drama is the protagonist Alfredo, lasted just under a year. The reason for their separation is all expressed in one of the most famous phrases of the work: "Dear Margherita, I am neither rich enough to love you as I would like, nor poor enough to be loved as you would like ...".
