Mare Fuori: the series that made Naples even more international

The television series Mare Fuori , produced by Rai Fiction and Picomedia and set in Naples, has been a huge success not only in our city, but throughout the country , not to mention the international fame that has invested it.

Currently, 2 seasons have been aired , one in 2020 and one in 2021, and at the end of the second season a third season was also officially announced which will be scheduled soon.

So, the story will continue for all fans. But what is this successful series about and where exactly is it set?

The stories of the juvenile prison of Nisida

Mare Fuori tells the story of some young inmates in the juvenile prison of Nisida , the island located off the coast of Naples, precisely in the Bagnoli district and at the foot of the large Virgiliano Park.

It narrates the world of these young incarcerated boys, which on the surface seems hopeless since they are often people who have worked for the Camorra and have had difficult lives that led them to become criminals.

Accompanying them throughout their prison journey are Director Paola and Commander Massimo , who support them and help them not lose sight of their aspirations.

Instead, as Picomedia producer Roberto Sessa also said, the show also has all the color and vitality of Naples and is like the flip side of Gomorrah because it gives us a sense of hope considering that there is a light at the end of the tunnel for these young people.

Where was the series shot

Even though the settings are those of the juvenile prison of Nisida , the scenes were filmed in the naval base of the Italian Navy in via Acton, also in Naples.

Nisida, the "island-non-island"

The island of Nisida is a special case of territory that currently has a confusing definition. We're referring to the fact that for many years, the territory of Nisida has been connected to the mainland of Naples by a pier, so calling it an island isn't exactly correct. The pier is accessible by car and was built in 1936.

It is located at the edge of the Posillipo offshoot , at the foot of the Virgiliano Park, and is part of the Phlegraean Islands archipelago together with Ischia, Capri and Procida.

It is not accessible , so it is not possible to visit it precisely because it is home to a juvenile prison. Until 2012, its small port facing Coroglio was used by NATO , which then moved to England.

On the side facing the other side of the coast, towards the open sea, there is an inlet called Porto Paone, which corresponds to the ancient caldera of the volcano from which the island originated. Finally, on the seabed, there are also several submerged archaeological finds, such as an ancient Roman pier.

An experiment between traditional TV and streaming

Mare Fuori was successful not only for the intensity of its consistently engaging stories, but also because it gave RAI the opportunity to experiment with a sort of hybrid in its broadcasting . Indeed, the series was broadcast on traditional television with regular weekly evening episodes on Rai2, but also streamed via the Rai Play platform.

“Since this is a young adult series and today's kids are completely out of linear TV,” says Sessa, “we decided to give the show both linear play and platform. This generated incredible traffic on RAI Play where traffic grew tenfold between the first and second season, currently reaching more than 26 million views in about two months, representing around 18% of RAI Play's total traffic. and currently make it the most streamed program in the country. Two thirds of RAI Play spectators are under the age of 45, which is far below the RAI demographic average these days ”.

The great international success

Mare Fuori has also had a strong impact on foreign media, so much so that it's seen a series of international TV sales thanks to its huge Italian success. The numbers we just cited for Rai Play have confirmed Mare Fuori's success abroad , attracting the attention of several television broadcasters.

Germany 's Beta Film , which is handling international distribution and selling the show internationally, has reached deals with WarnerMedia Latin America for HBO Max , Swedish free-to-air channel TV4, HOT in Israel, and streamer Blu TV in Turkey. Rights will also be sold in France , Spain , and Germany itself.

It is certainly a rare case of an Italian series with teenagers that goes beyond national borders.

The third season

After many doubts, viewers were able to breathe a sigh of relief at the end of the second season because it was on that occasion that the production of the third season was officially announced.

It will be filmed starting next spring and the aim is to broadcast it in the autumn.
