13 will debut tonight April Teatro San Carlo of Naples the Othello by Giuseppe Verdi, inspired by Shakespeare's tragedy of the same name written around 1603.

THEOthello is the penultimate work of Giuseppe Verdi, composed in 1886 after fifteen years of silence after his previous work, theAida. The booklet was created at the request of Arrigo Boito and Giulio Ricordi, and the opera was performed for the first time at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan on February 5, 1887. Compared to the original Shakespearean, Verdi and Boito decided to eliminate the first act, which concerns an antecedent set in Venice, to make the dramaturgy tighter, and dances were included in the third act.

In relation to previous Verdi works, Othello it contains numerous elements of novelty compared to Verdi's previous operas. The closed forms are less and less recognizable, now largely replaced by a continuous musical flow, which many at the time considered to be of Wagnerian inspiration. Verdi he decided to move in tune with the sensitivity of the end of the century by choosing one of the most disturbing psychological dramas of all the prose theater and sensing the need to probe the abysses of the human soul.

The direction ofOthello proposed at the Teatro San Carlo is of Henning Brockhaus, in co-production with the Teatro Massimo of Palermo. Maestro Nicola Luisotti conducts the San Carlo Theater Orchestra who states:

“Otello is an extremely contemporary work. It deals with a full-blown femicide, arising only from a suspicion. How many women still die victims of male suspicion, of the desire for possession of men who do not recognize in them individuals with their own freedom and personality. Musically here Verdi has surpassed himself and with the help of Boito he has elaborated a masterpiece that is the sum of all the musical nineteenth century and which contains in itself a world "

The next 22th April lo spettacolo Othello will be transmitted exceptionally live from the San Carlo Theater in over 100 Italian cinemas, starting at 20.30.
