L'Altro Japan at the Mann in Naples with free film screenings and exhibitions

At the Mann in Naples, the National archeologic museum, the initiative "The Other Japan”Dedicated to the world of the Rising Sun and which provides a rich program of free film screenings. The theme of this edition is “Resist / Reborn. Man and nature in contemporary Japanese society.

Kicked off a couple of days ago but will end on October 3, 2021, reaching its third edition with a tribute to the memory of Stefano Carrer, a journalist who died in 2020. The films and documentaries are broadcast in the Mann's new space dedicated to film screenings, the Auditorium of the former Palazzo degli Studi.

It is not the first time that Mann has dedicated an in-depth study to Japan and it will not be the last because manga productions are also planned for the next two years, in collaboration with Comix. Furthermore, for many years the Mann has been present in Japan with important exhibitions also to recognize the profound contribution that this country has given and gives to Pompeian studies.

Friday 14th October

  • 11.00 am: “My Man” by Kazuyoshi Kumakiri, 2014, 100'.VO with Italian subtitles.
  • 15.00 pm: “Koi”. Documentary by Lorenzo Squarcia, 2019, 78 '.VO with Italian subtitles. With the director and Simone Spampinato.
  • 17.00 pm: "Cafè Funiculì Funiculà" by Ayuko Tsukahara, 2018, 116 '. VO with Italian subtitles. Italian premiere.

Saturday October 2

  • 11.00: “FInal Straw”. Documentary by Suhee Kang and Patrick M. Lydon, 2015, 74 '. VO with Italian subtitles. Introduced by Yosuke Taki and Chiara Ghidini.
  • 15.00 pm: “Dreaming an Island”. Documentary by Andrea Pellerani, 2021,77 '. VO with Italian subtitles. Italian premiere.
  • 17.00 pm: “Distance”. Film by Hirokazu Kore'eda, 2001, 133 '. VO with Italian subtitles.

Sunday October 3

  • 11.00 am: “Sakamoto / Coda”. Documentary by SN Schible, 2017, 102 '. VO with Italian subtitles.
  • 15.00 pm: “The Witches of the Orient”. Documentary by Julien Faraut, 2021, 100 '. VO with Italian subtitles.
  • 17.00 pm: “The total Package: Tribute to Yuzuru Hanyu. “The Man, the Champion, the Artist, the Superstar”. Video and talk with Massimiliano Ambesi.

To participate in the screenings it is necessary book on the L'Altro Japan website. Admissions will be limited to a limited number of places. Seats will be reserved up to ten minutes before the start of the screening.

Exhibitions dedicated to Japan

In addition to the film screenings, the Mann has also set up some exhibitions that will last for several months, some until January, and are always dedicated to Japan. They were set up in the Mann's New Arm.

Until October 3 you can admire the exhibit "11 Stories on Distanced Relationships: Contemporary Art From Japan“, Organized with the Japan Foundation.

Until November 29 there will be a photo exhibition "Japan Tsunami / A long Walk in Tōhoku”With photos and videos by Gianni Giosuè, a journalist who made reports after the 2011 tsunami.

Everlasting until November 29 there will be an exhibition "Buddha statues in the land of Yamato”By Kōzō Ogawa, in the Sala dei Tirannicidi, with photos of the artist who will interact virtually with the works of the Farnese Collection.

Until January 6 2022finally, they will be present Japanese armor and swords, in the Auditorium, thanks to the collaboration with the Filangieri Civic Museum.

To access the Mann, therefore also to participate in the screenings and to visit the exhibitions, it is necessary to own the Green pass.
