A Countryside in province of Salerno the appointment with 'In Chiena, the great water festival, one of the most characteristic and awaited by citizens. The event will take place starting from 10 July and will continue for all Saturdays and Sundays successive until August 17, 2022, day on which there will be scheduled the Midnight church.
The appointment is organized by the Pro Loco di Campagna in collaboration with the Municipality of the Province of Salerno, which will soon undertake to publish the complete program of appointments. We are sure there will be no lack of these water balloons, music and artistic events.
The history of the Water Festival
The Water Festival in Chiena di Campagna is one of the most characteristic events that is celebrated in the South of Italy and during which the small streets of the town are flooded with the partial deviation of the River Tenza, a tributary of the Sele.
The festival has ancient origins and it seems that the flooding of the city is connected with the street and shop cleaning, other sources indicate in this operation the need to clean up the city from the plague of the seventeenth century, still others to eliminate the excrement of pack animals in the summer, especially during periods of drought.
The Water Festival has been celebrated since 1982 with mechanical flooding with an ancient stone barrier. Many initiatives are scheduled, such as the famous one bucketful, cooling off with buckets of water in the streets of the city.
