Un culinary event which pays homage to local tradition and folklore is ready to make its comeback. The 40th Omelette Festival Will be held the 27 and 28 May 2023 a Montaquila, in the province of Isernia. This celebration, located in the picturesque Volturno Valley, offers not only delicious dishes but also organisers' activities such as trekking and horse riding.
The origins of the festival
La party originates from an ancient custom of Montaquila, where the “Easter omelette” is a characteristic dish. The eggs, abundant during spring, are used to prepare a large omelette which is then shared with neighbors or offered to those who have not had the opportunity to make it. This gesture symbolizes a wish for life, maintaining the symbolic meaning of the egg.
Therefore, about forty years ago, to celebrate this tradition, was born the Omelette Festival. The typical recipe of Montaquila combines various local products, such as eggs, cured meats, oil and aromatic herbs. During the festival, in addition to the “regina” of the omelettes, made with over a thousand eggs, the families of the town also prepare smaller omelettes, containing from 51 to 101 eggs. These are then offered and used for the festival.
The omelette festival is not just a culinary event, but a way to preserve and pass on the local traditions to future generations. In addition to the cuisine, the festival also includes conferences, folk dance lessons, photography competitions, trekking, horseback riding and vintage car and vespa rallies. And, of course, can not miss the music, with performances by world music groups and nationally renowned guests.

This year, the Omelette Festival will come back to liven up the Molise spring with an explosion of colours, sounds and flavours. An event not to be missed for those who love the gastronomy, music and popular traditions.
