Today 24 May 2022 is the day of Mario Martone at the Cannes Film Festival, in fact his will be presented new movie, Nostalgia, set in Naples, precisely in the Rione Sanità.

The Neapolitan director has transposed thehomonymous novel by Ermanno Rea.

At the moment they are only available few images and the trailer, in addition to the plot of course, and there is great anticipation for the debut at the prestigious French Festival. It is the only Italian film in competition at this 75th edition for the Palme d'Or.

Our Naples is increasingly a protagonist in international cinema, just think of the great success of the film "It was the hand of God" by Paolo Sorrentino, also nominated for an Oscar.

In Italian cinemas the film will be released Wednesday May 25, but it is not yet known if and when it will be broadcast on streaming platforms.

The plot of the film Nostalgia

The protagonist of the film is Felice, interpreted by Pierfrancesco Favino, in the background of Rione Sanità, one of the most famous and popular areas of Naples, the belly of our city.

The story tells of the return to Naples of this expatriate man who, after 40 years away, goes to the neighborhood where he was born and with which he has a controversial and visceral relationship. A strong bond, which almost seems to devour it, and which can also extend beyond the boundaries of the Rione Sanità, extending to all of Naples.

The film takes us to discover himself and the city, while the its past slowly re-emerges.

As mentioned, not many scenes from the film are known at the moment because they were only made some photos official, like the two you have seen reading the article so far and those inserted further down in the Instagram post, and a trailer.

In the images the protagonist is always Pierfrancesco Favino, but there are also some stage photos together with the director Mario Martone, who is also the screenwriter of the film.

From the trailer we can immediately see one strong soundtrack that strikes the viewer, as well as a very accurate photograph and a direction that is attentive to every detail.

Who is Mario Martone

Martone is a Neapolitan director who often included Naples in his films, taking inspiration from books set in our city or from stories of iconic and important characters, such as the playwright Eduardo Scarpetta, at the center of his penultimate film Here I laugh, back from a great success.

His debut, which made him known to the general public, was with the film “Death of a Neapolitan mathematician”Of 1992 and based on the life of the mathematician Renato Caccioppoli.

In his filmography there are also:

  • L'amore molesto (1995), based on the novel by Elena Ferrante, which we all know by now for tetralogy "The brilliant friend";
  • The smell of blood (2004);
  • We believed (2010);
  • Il Giovane Favoloso (2014) on the life of Giacomo Leopardi;
  • Here I laugh (2021).

Martone is also a theater director and, among other activities:

  • he conducted La Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan;
  • he staged Giacomo Leopardi's Operette morali in various theaters;
  • he is the director of the opera Andrea Chénier at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan.
